2010 Inspiration Child
Meet Cory Milburn! Cory is an energetic three year old boy who celebrates his birthdays a bit more special than most! Why? Because most people didn't think Cory would live. He is a true inspiration to many!
Cory was born 15 weeks premature back in April of 2007. After struggling for days on a ventilator, the doctors and staff at the Golisano Children's Hospital at Strong didn't think there was much they could do for little Cory. They gave Cory's family an opportunity to say goodbye to their newborn son. Because of his serious medical condition, it was also the first time Patti was able to hold her baby.
"I said, 'It's OK if you have to go, you've fought hard for us," Patti Milburn recalls, "but if you have to go, that's OK." She spoke words that no mother ever wants to, yet Patti had found the strength to let her son know it was OK!
Shortly after his family said goodbye, Cory's vital signs mysteriously improved. Hours passed and his condition continued to get better. The hours extended into days (104 DAYS!) and Cory was eventually able to leave the hospital with his parents, Patti and Mike. He was finally able to go home to meet his siblings, a feat that had seemed impossible only a few days before.
"He's a stubborn little guy who doesn't like to hear 'no'," jokes Mike Milburn. "But we'll take it, because without that personality, I don't think he'd be here."
Both Mike and Patti say they were amazed by the level of care and compassion from the doctors and staff at Golisano Children's Hospital at Strong. This is another truly amazing story that captures our hearts, and another reason why our event continues to raise funds for such a great facility!
